Learner Permits
How do I apply for a first learner permit?
To apply for your first learner permit, you need to:
- Pass your Driver Theory Test
- Complete and sign a learner permit application form (D201)
- Provide proof of identity (passport or Public Services Card)
- Provide proof of address (less than 6 months old)
- Provide proof of PPS number
- Supply a medical report if required
- Supply an eyesight report
- Provide two passport-sized photographs
- Pay the appropriate fee

How long is a learner permit valid for?
A learner permit is typically valid for 2 years. For first-time learner permit holders, you must hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking your driving test.
What are the restrictions while driving with a learner permit?
When driving with a learner permit, you must:
- Always be accompanied by a qualified driver (held full licence for minimum 2 years)
- Display L-plates on the front and rear of the vehicle
- Never drive on motorways
- Never carry passengers for payment or reward
- Always carry your learner permit while driving
Essential Driver Training (EDT)
What is EDT and why do I need it?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course for learner drivers. It consists of 12 one-hour lessons that help develop the basic driving skills you need to become a safe and competent driver.
You must complete EDT before taking your driving test unless you qualify for an exemption.
How do I track my EDT progress?
Your EDT progress is tracked through your official EDT logbook, which your instructor will update after each lesson. You can also track your progress online through the RSA's My EDT portal.
Can I take EDT lessons in an automatic car?
Yes, you can complete your EDT in an automatic car. However, this means your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles only. If you want to drive manual cars, you should complete your EDT in a manual vehicle.
Driving Test
What are the requirements to book a driving test?
To be eligible for a driving test, you must:
- Hold a valid learner permit
- Have held your learner permit for at least 6 months
- Have completed your mandatory EDT lessons (if required)
- Have access to an appropriate vehicle for the test
What documents do I need to bring to my driving test?
On the day of your test, you must bring:
- Your current learner permit
- A vehicle that is taxed, insured, and NCT certified (if required)
- Your completed EDT logbook (if applicable)
- Proof of tax and insurance for the test vehicle
How long does the driving test take?
The driving test typically takes about 40 minutes. This includes:
- Document and vehicle safety check (10 minutes)
- On-road driving test (30 minutes)
You should arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time.
After the Test
What happens after I pass my test?
After passing your test:
- You'll receive a Certificate of Competency
- You must apply for your full licence within 2 years
- You must display N-plates for 2 years
- You're subject to lower penalty point thresholds
How do I apply for my full licence?
To apply for your full licence:
- Visit an NDLS centre within 2 years of passing your test
- Bring your Certificate of Competency
- Bring proof of identity and address
- Provide two passport-sized photos
- Pay the licence fee
