Using My Car for Your Driving Test in Wicklow
Do you need your own car for the driving test?
No. If you do not have a car of your own, or the one you learned in is not suitable, you can sit your test in mine. Most of the learners I take to the Wicklow test centre are in exactly that position — they have practised in my car all along, and changing vehicle for the one drive that counts would make no sense.
How it works
A pretest comes first. That is not a sales step and it is not negotiable: before I put someone in my car for a test, I need to have driven with them, so I know they are safe on the roads the tester will use. It also means test morning is not the first time you meet the car — the biting point, the mirrors, where the indicator stalk sits. None of that should be new to you on the day.
We meet at the Murrough
The Murrough car park is beside the Wicklow test centre, so that is where we meet rather than at your door. It leaves time to settle into the car before you go in, and it is where you come back to afterwards.
Manual or automatic
Both are available. You test in whichever you have been learning in — there is nothing to gain by switching for the sake of it.
You are covered to drive it
You are fully insured to drive my car for the test itself. That is arranged beforehand, so it is not one more thing for you to organise.
If your test date moves
Tests get cancelled and dates get moved, sometimes at short notice and usually for reasons that are nobody's fault. There is no rigid policy published here, because circumstances differ. Tell me as soon as you know and we will work out the new arrangement between us.
Driving Test Facts
For your Irish driving test, the car must weigh no more than 3,500 kg, seat no more than eight passengers besides the driver, and be capable of at least 100 km/h. Mine complies, whether you are testing in automatic or manual. Pass in an automatic and your licence is automatic-only — ideal if that is your goal.
