Refresher Driving Lessons in Wicklow

Coming back to driving after a while?

Refresher lessons are for people who can already drive, or could once, and want to be comfortable doing it again. There is no fixed course and no set number of hours. What we do depends entirely on where you are when we start, which is something I would rather find out than assume.

Full licence or learner permit No fixed course

You have not driven in years

The licence is still valid and most of the skill is still there. What has gone is the confidence and the habits, and those come back faster than people expect — usually in fewer hours than they were bracing for.

Your licence is from another country

You can drive; Irish roads just ask different things. Roundabouts, unmarked rural junctions, and driving on the left if that is new to you. The driving is rarely the hard part. The conventions are.

You have a licence and still find it hard

Passing the test and being comfortable on the road are not the same thing, and plenty of people hold a licence they hardly use. There is nothing unusual about this and it is worth saying out loud.

If your licence is from outside Ireland

Whether you can simply exchange it depends on which country issued it, and that is decided by the NDLS rather than by me. If it can be exchanged, refresher lessons are about adjusting to how traffic behaves here rather than about passing anything. If it cannot, you will need an Irish learner permit and a shorter training programme instead of the full twelve lessons — that is reduced EDT, and the conditions are set out on that page. Check ndls.ie for your own country before assuming either way.

How many will you need?

I will not put a number on it before meeting you. The honest answer ranges from one to a dozen depending on how long it has been and what you want to be able to do at the end — someone who wants to drive a familiar route to work needs less than someone who wants to be comfortable anywhere. We can decide as we go rather than committing up front.

If you are retaking your test

That is a different lesson, and this page used to say otherwise. Refresher work is about being comfortable driving again; preparing for a test is about what a tester marks, and the two overlap less than they sound like they should. Go to pretest instead — it is built for that, and you will get more out of the same hour.

Do you pick me up from home?

We start and finish at a meeting point we agree, usually near the centre; there is no pickup service.
